Our story started as a dream. And now it is our reality.
In 2011, Jack and Cynthia were living in their “dream home” in Mineville, NS, near Lawrencetown Beach. Jack was a professional bus driver and Cynthia was working as a Recreation Programmer in a long term care facility. They had 3 dogs – Buddy the greyhound, Meg the chocolate Lab and Holly, a border terrier. Their lives changed in November of that year with the tragic death of their beloved Meg. They began to think deeply about where and how they were living as they healed from her loss.
Jack always dreamt of country life, and grew wonderful veggies in his raised bed gardens. In 2012, he commented that he would like to have chickens but it wasn’t possible where they were living. Later that year, Jack and Cynthia participated in a 4 week workshop called “Exploring the New Farm Dream”. And they were hooked. They began to look in earnest for a property that would better suit them. And in late 2013 they found it. In a small rural village in West Hants called Scotch Village.
Not only was the small bungalow perfect for them, the property came with 10 acres of land, a pond and 200+ high-bush blueberry bushes which the previous owners operated as a u-pick. They were successful in their bid and in early 2014 moved “home” to the piece of property that is now home to their dogs and chickens and blueberries and pigs and bees and maybe one day sheep and goats.
This is the story of how Jack and Cynthia Bernier created their New/Small Farm. We welcome you to share it with us.
